The handcrafted scorched English oak side table is a striking piece of contemporary furniture that combines bold architectural form with traditional craftsmanship.
Drawing inspiration from the honesty of construction and materiality championed by the British Arts and Crafts movement, the design balances strong contemporary lines with time-honoured furniture-making techniques. Crafted entirely by hand in England from carefully selected English quarter-sawn oak, each piece possesses a unique character shaped by both the timber and the maker's hand.
The oak undergoes a highly skilled scorching process requiring numerous careful and controlled applications of flame until the surface achieves a rich, uniform black finish. This labour-intensive technique enhances the texture and grain of the timber while creating a dramatic visual contrast against the lighter exposed details of the construction.
Prominently featured wedged joints celebrate the structure of the piece and provide a striking counterpoint to the deep blackened oak. A shallow inset dish of English yew introduces warmth, colour, and visual contrast, highlighting the beauty of combining native timbers within a single design.
The finish draws inspiration from Yakisugi, often referred to as Shou Sugi Ban, the traditional Japanese technique originally developed to preserve and protect Japanese cypress through controlled surface charring. While adapted here for English oak, the process produces a similarly rich black appearance, exceptional durability, and a tactile surface that rewards close inspection.
Finished by hand and built using traditional furniture-making techniques, each console table is created to provide lasting beauty and utility for generations. The result is a distinctive and idiosyncratic piece that sits comfortably within contemporary, modernist, Arts and Crafts, and eclectic interiors alike.
