Loose Fit

Loose Fit was started in 2018 by James Torble, with the aim of creating beautiful furniture in British grown wood.

Loose Fit furniture is lovingly designed and crafted at their workshop in East Sussex. James is a maker fascinated by his craft and the possibilities of what can be created in British wood.

James designs and makes furniture to be fun to live with, while being sensitive to the demands of natural timber. He takes design inspiration from a wide range of sources, from English pub furniture to Aztec friezes. All Loose Fit furniture is joined by hand using traditional techniques with thoughtful details which accentuate the natural robust beauty of solid timber.

Each piece of furniture is totally made by hand, using locally sourced British hardwoods, such as unwanted trees that councils have cut down. The skills of traditional joinery are kept alive with playful designs, well considered details and a love of crafting wood.

Loose Fit furniture fits with a range of lifestyles and can move from place to place as life progresses. Rather than making expensive fitted furniture with a large amount of labour and installation costs, Loose Fit free-standing furniture can be made efficiently in the workshop with higher quality natural materials and a better quality of construction.

James has a background in fine art, having studied at Central Saint Martins College, London, before building himself a houseboat and developing a passion for furniture and design in the process.
